Mary Moran’s Poppy Seed Cake

 1 cup Shortening (Crisco)
 1 ½ cups Sugar
 4 Egg Yolks
 1 tsp Baking Soda
 8 tbsp Ground Poppy Seeds
 2 cups Flour
 1 cup Sour Cream (8 ounces)
 4 Egg Whites
 1 tsp Vanilla

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add beaten egg yolks and sour cream to mixture until well blended. Add flour and baking soda until blended. Mix in the vanilla and poppy seeds until well blended. In a separate bowl beat egg whites until they are stiffly beaten. Gently fold in beaten egg whites into the batter. Grease and flour a 9 by 13 pan or two 9 inch round pans, pour batter into pan. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 50 to 55 minutes.
