Mix one package of yellow cake mix, minus the one cup you reserved with the softened butter and one egg. The batter will be sticky and crumbly. Place the batter in the refrigerator for fifteen minutes. Remove and spread in a greased 9 by 13 inch pan.
Combine the Pumpkin puree, sugar, beaten eggs, salt and pie spice together until well blended. Pour over the cake mixture.
Mix together the cake mix, sugar and walnuts and sprinkle evenly on top of the cake. Place the small pieces of butter, dotting the top of the cake. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 45 to 55 minutes.
